Detroit Metro Airport FAA Control Tower Upgrades
January 31, 2020
In 2017, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport handled 34,701,497 million passengers.
Demands on the tower have increased as technology has changed. Guardian designed and installed the original lightning protection system nearly 30 years ago. All of the original project team members have since retired from Guardian.
The newly designed and installed system addresses the tower’s unique susceptibility to catastrophic strikes. The combination of the tower’s height and the volume of electronics housed within the structure make an almost irresistible lightning strike target.
The project began as a functionality and suitability audit. A 300-ton crane carried Guardian team members and materials 250 feet into the Detroit sky to install the lightning protection system.
